GPS Fundamentals with TerraSync & Pathfinder Office

For those new to TerraSync and Pathfinder Office software. This class covers the fundamentals of GPS technology.

We will look at the basic principles of GPS and learn how to apply them with TerraSync software.

You will learn how to set up your unit, transfer data between your field and office computers, collect GPS data, and post-process back in the office.

Starting with ArcPad and Trimble GPS Correct/GPS Analyst

Taking your GIS out into the field is easy with ArcPad software.

Learn the correct settings for your Trimble GPS unit to work with ArcPad. We will cover the basics of working with ArcPad — how to transfer your data to/from ArcGIS and ArcPad, collecting points, lines, and polygons, and how to post-process the data back in the office using GPS Analyst and how to GPS enable your geodatabase.

Collecting and Preparing GPS Data for a GIS

Collecting GPS data for a GIS empowers organizations to enhance and develop their geodatabase. All of Trimble’s GIS/Mapping grade receivers are designed to collect both location and attribute data — something that recreational grade receivers cannot do. Using the right tools, your GIS benefits from the knowledge of your field workers.

Introduction to Data Dictionaries

Data Dictionaries define the features, their geometry type, and attributes that will be collected with a GPS device.

Students will learn how to design an effective data dictionary in GPS Pathfinder Office software that will include points, lines and polygons and how to keep the data dictionary true to the geodatabase.

Enhancing your GIS with Digital Photos

Now you can take a digital photo of a feature in the field and embed it in the attribute table of the feature on your GPS device.

This two-hour class will teach students how to enhance their GIS by adding digital photos to the data dictionary for use on a GPS device. Students will learn how to prepare a data dictionary for a digital photo and how to use the photo when it is imported into ArcGIS.

Essentials of GIS Spatial Data

This half-day class will cover the essentials of GIS spatial data. Anyone working in GIS absolutely must understand the nature of spatial data, various spatial data formats, how to convert from one to another, and what to do if your data do not line up properly — this class covers these topics and more.

Topics covered include: coverages, shapefiles, geodatabases, CAD data, imagery formats, coordinate systems, projection-on-the-fly, and what to do if data do not line up.
